Springtime in Iceland is a must! The country is in the process of awakening from it’s winter hibernation and explodes into life in the span of only a couple of weeks. Birds return from their migrations to nest, rivers and waterfalls start flowing again, greenery re-emerges, and most of all, you’ll be able to take advantage of almost constant daylight as well as fairly mild weather. This self-drive tour explores the southern coast. Each segment of the trip is relatively short, allowing you time for hiking and discovering Iceland’s natural marvels at their most vibrant!

Arrival in Keflavik international airport. Rental car pick up and drive to Reykjavík. Settle into your accommodation before a night at your leisure in the world’s northernmost capital.

Night in Reykjavík
The morning is spent driving to reach Snaefellsnes peninsula along the famous “whale fjord”. In the afternoon, visit the wild coast in between the tiny ports of Arnastapi and Hellnar. Coves and cliffs alternate along the shore and are the homes of Black-legged Kittiwake gulls and of arctic terns. You can also choose to discover the reefs of Djupalonssandur or the edges of the Snæfellsjökull glacier with its pumice stone expanses.

Spending the night in the Budir region.
Another morning drive along the coast, this time with opportunities to observe the numerous nesting birds who make their springtime homes here. You’ll have the time to drive around Snaefellsnes peninsula, a spectacular region of many varied landscapes. Traveling around this wondrous glacier, the coastal road takes you amongst bird covered cliffs and small sandy beaches.

Staying overnight in the Borgarnes region.
Head inland towards Iceland’s famous Golden Circle: the Strokkur geyser at Geysir, the Gullfoss waterfall where the Hvítá River has carved an impressive canyon, the effects of the oceanic rift in Thingvellir (also the site of the historic Icelandic parliament). You’ll go through a verdant countryside even if the peaks of the central highlands are still covered in snow.

Staying overnight in the Geysir region.
Discover the marvels lying at the feet of the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. Black sand beaches and bird cliffs on the ocean-side of the road. On the other side, innumerable waterfalls crash from cliff tops and glacier tongues drift down from the mountains higher up. Stop at the Skogar waterfall and visit its rustic museum. You’ll arrive in Vik in the afternoon to meet the puffin colonies that reside there. If you are in a 4WD vehicle, drive down to the black sand beaches of Dyrholaey.

Night over the island Vestmanneyjar.
Take a morning hike along the cliffs where you can get up close and personal with the puffin colonies residing there. You can also purchase a tour allowing you to discover more of the island archipelago that is home to Icelands largest concentration of birds and the island of Surtsey that erupted from the ocean in 1963! Everything is fresh in Iceland! Ferry ride back to Landeyjahöfn followed by a short drive to Reykjavík. Return your rental car and enjoy a night at your leisure in Reykjavík.

The vast majority of Icelandic establishments are modest, but clean and comfortable. Most of the guesthouses, farmhouses and hotels offer catering. Your accommodation will fall under whichever category of establishment you choose. There is also a camping option (all camping equipment provided). With our voucher system, you’ll be able to camp when and where you want, giving you as much freedom as you want to adapt your itinerary based on the weather as well as your own location choices. We recommend that your book your Iceland self-drive as soon as possible in order to have to the most choice when it comes to the establishment itself and the type of accommodation you stay in.
